Terra Care Thematic

TerraCare Thematic provides a range of comprehensive and reliable geo-information products for effective mapping and monitoring of the environment and facilitating decision making and planning processes.

DATASETS

Thematic land-cover/land-use mapping (more)

Products rely on vegetation appearance, leaf types (such as broadleaf and needleleaf), tree density (forest, woodland, savanna) and climate.

Thematic land-cover maps focus on such elements as:

  • Water (watershed mapping, water quality indicator maps, water bodies and seasonality, water catchments)

  • Forest (deforestation, regeneration, degradation maps), forest cover inventory and analysis maps (deciduous, evergreen , mixed forest, percent of canopy cover, forest composition by species or coverage, woody biomass)

  • Wetland, shrubland, etc.

  • Vegetation species (species indexing, invasive species detection, invasive species host detection)

  • Agriculture (crop distribution maps)

Land Cover/Land Use Monitoring (more)

  • Change-detection analysis maps for a range of applications (deforestation, desertification, erosion, etc. for example to map forest extent, clearing and regrowth), comprising a land-cover layer based on a reference archive image furnished by Infoterra (SPOT or Landsat archive imagery, for example) or by the customer.

  • Disaster maps for different types of natural disasters (flood, fire, hurricane), such as burn-scar and flood-delineation maps, through our rapid mapping service if needed. These products can be provided in the form of vulnerability maps, disaster extent maps, environmental damage assessment maps and recovery maps.

  • Phenology maps (vegetation cycle analysis throughout the season)

Special Content Packs (more)

Packs with multiple data layers are also available on request. Reference or data source layers can be provided, for example:

  • Satellite image used as data source
  • Simplified and reference information maps (topography, rivers and streams, transportation, points of interest, etc.). See the EXPRESSMaps service.
  • Simplified map product comprising land-cover layer, with topography and place names, boundaries and population layers.
  • Disaster packs comprising a reference land-cover layer based on archive imagery before the event, disaster extent or damage assessment maps based on a new SPOT scene acquired rapidly.
  • Biophysical characterization along with land-cover datasets, providing more information about specific land-cover classes

Technical specifications (more)

  • Broad range of thematic resolutions

We provide general-purpose or special-purpose land-cover products geared toward a particular type of cover. However, even for projects focused on a specific topic (and unless the initial classification scheme is very precise), a minimum of general-purpose land-cover data will always be required.

The level of nomenclature detail typically ranges from a few classes to several tens of classes with several hierarchical levels.

  • Several spatial resolutions available

Multispectral satellite imagery ranging from medium to very high resolution—MERIS, MODIS, Landsat, SPOT, FORMOSAT-2, IKONOS, QuickBird—for global, biome-level, regional and standard or comprehensive land-cover datasets. The pixel size of source imagery defines the positional accuracy of classified features and the minimum feature size.

Several minimum mapping units (MMUs) are available on request. These may vary according to the class

  • Delivery formats

Datasets are delivered as raster (grid) or vector (polygon) and in a GIS-compatible format for more-detailed classifications and higher-level analysis to create custom solutions

  • Licensing

Different licenses apply, from agency-wide to single-seat or special multi-NGO licenses, enabling them to pool resources.

SERVICES

TerraCare offers an on-demand land-cover service including:

  • immediate feasibility study
  • set delivery deadlines
  • custom nomenclature if required
  • data consultancy
    • integration/reprocessing of your data or third-party datasets
    • advice on choosing appropriate image source, classification and projections for the land-cover datasets to be produced.
  • consultancy on environmental impact assessment, natural resource management, land planning and more, through a network of partners.

High-volume orders are subject to custom scheduling.

TRAINING & CAPACITY BUILDING

Increased emphasis on partnership has raised demand for process facilitation, transfer of technology know-how and capacity building. TerraCase in-house experts will help communities engaged in environment conservation—industry, government, NGOs, multilateral organizations and corporations—to define their own land-cover information needs and to design/develop tailor-made solutions based on TerraCare core components. Technology transfer includes intensive hands-on training, on your premises or at third-party training facilities.
